Kimber, oh how I love the name! She came in and rocked out her session. Mom and Dad came in and picked some of their favorite props and clothing and I put them together to create beautiful art for them to cherish for lifetimes. Creating memories for our clients brings so much joy! The snuggles are great too! There’s just something so intoxicating about the smell of a new baby. It just kicks those ovaries into overdrive!!!

Here is Kimber’s session with us.

There are several ways to skin a cat or in this case use Lightroom for your organization needs. I use Lightroom to import my raw files, so that I may cull through them and edit them in Photoshop. Although there are a few ways of doing this, I am going to show you how convenient and streamline my process really is.  And I am a visual learner so I used images to help show you!

First thing I do is make a folder on my external hard drive. I highly suggest using one as your computer needs all the memory and space to run efficiently, plus raw files take up a lot of space.Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNGOnce I have made a folder, in this case the clients name, I open Lightroom. Click import and this dialog opens.

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNG

You can see my SD card is selected on the upper left. This is where the images are importing from. I then select my source of destination which is on the right side panel listed as the client’s name. I also select do not import supplicates and make smart previews.

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNG

I then make sure at the top that copy as DNG is selected. I convert all my RAW files to DNG files. Here is a great article explaining why. It’s really nice not having to deal with those darn XMP.files anymore!

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNGOnce everything is selected click import.

When all the images have been imported and converted to DNG files, I start my culling process. I begin by selecting a set of images from a set-up and flag the ones I feel are the best.  I do this with each pose and setup to find the images that pass my standards.

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNG

I then create a folder inside the client’s folder and call it CULLS and move the flagged images to said folder.

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNG

I then begin my editing process. I select a series of images and open them in PS to begin my editing. Once I complete my image in PS, the image is saved back into Lightroom where it is now a TIFF file. I love how I still have my original image and the edited version.

Once all my edits are completed, I make one more folder inside my client’s folder labeled FINALS. I select my final edits and move them to this folder. What’s nice as I’m making these folders in Lighroom, they are also being made on my external hard drive! This means one less step of backing up my finals later to the external hard drive.

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNG

Next I need to export these images in JPEGS for my clients.  I begin by selecting the images and going to EXPORT as shown below by right clicking.

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNG

I choose where I would like these images to export to and rename the files as shown below.

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNGLightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNG

I then make sure the image format is set to JPEG, resolution 300 and click export. Now my images are ready to be sent to my client. By using these simple steps, I can now save time and be organized in one location. . Once I’m ready to clear my client’s files from Lightroom (which you should do often as it helps keep Lightroom running efficiently), all you have to do is remove them from the folders area, and it never touches your external hard drive.

Lightroom, Culling, exporting, converting, DNG

I hope you have found this helpful in importing, converting, culling, and exporting your images using Lightroom. It has been a timesaver for myself and hope that it in some ways becomes a timesaver for you as well.

We at Precious Encounters Photography plan custom cake smash sessions for each of our clients. When clients book their cake smash, a little questionnaire is sent out to get some ideas about what the parents may or may not like. We then begin our creative planning. This set was created around the little romper she is wearing. It  inspired the theme, colors and setting for her custom cake smash. We also work very closely with a local baker in town to create custom cakes to match the theme. These moments are fun to watch and capture as each child reacts differently to cake. Some love it so much that we have to remind them to come up for air and then some are not quite sure what to do with it, and then there are some who flat out want nothing to do with it!

We also do their first year portraits at the beginning of the session. This way if the cake is a no go, we still have some beautiful images to complete their gallery. As we can see below, Miss Mila LOVED her cake smash and her first year portraits!

We absolutely love studio maternity sessions! They are our favorite to capture of expecting moms. There is something to be said about an expecting mother and their beauty as their bodies change to make room for another person! Maternity sessions are glamorous and show off the beauty of moms to be. We provide maternity clothing for these special sessions, so there is one less thing they have to buy and get for their session.

We have a commercial studio located in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, so our clients can feel comfortable and not have to worry about going to someones home. We want our clients to feel relaxed as possible and know they will enjoy their session with us!

Newborn sessions are our muse! Nick rocked out his newborn session, and his sisters were a delight in the studio.

The handsome Nick was in for his newborn portraits. He was a dream to pose and photograph in our downtown Colorado Springs studio. Newborn sessions are our muse! We love everything about them. Mostly the snuggles. We love the snuggles!  All his tiny little features, smile, nose, toes. I couldn’t get enough of him. Little Nick has two big sisters who just adore him!

Newborns are best photographed between 7-20 days. At this age they are still sleepy, and pose easily. I know there can be circumstances that prevent some from getting their portraits taken at that age, and thats why we never turn any away due to age. We have photographed a 6 week old baby and he slept like a dream, but since he was a little bigger and older, some poses were not ideal for him and that’s okay.

Here at Precious Encounters Photography we offer three newborn options. We have the Premier Newborn which comes with multiple set-ups and includes parent and sibling shots and 25 digital images, the Dreamy Newborn with multiple set-ups and includes family and siblings and 15 digital images, and our Petite Newborn with a couple set-ups for just baby and comes with 10 digital images.

We know how important it is to print what you want to preserve! We offer multiple ways for our clients to share their beautiful images with family and friends. We offer albums, prints, canvas wraps, and fine art prints. We guarantee our labs quality, so your family can cherish your portraits for generations to come!
